Groome family manuscript volume and sketchbook, 1816-1877.

Manuscript volume chiefly in the hand of Peregrine William Groome of Easton, Maryland, divided for accounts and other entries, and sketchbook by Maria Elizabeth Groome. The accounts document expenditures from 1816 to 1867. Other entries, dating to 1867, include copies of correspondence, a "memorandum" on Peregrine Groome's life, and records of the "Births, Ages &c of the Family of Daniel Groome." Correspondence consists of copies of letters of introduction for Peregrine William Groome, dated February 1828, from Peregrine's uncle Samuel Groome, future President Martin Van Buren, and Nathan Sandford. The volume includes annotations dating to 1877 in unidentified hands. The sketchbook includes approximately 45 pencil drawings, as well as two watercolors, of characters and views observed on a tour of Europe. The accounts and memorandum, which note annual expenditures and expenses for basic goods, as well as travel and trips to cultural events such as the theater, document the domestic and social affairs of a 19th century New England family.
